Trip: St John - Virgin Islands
My favorite sites of the trip ended up being the Ledges of Little Saint James and Steven Cay. Steven Cay is a shallow second dive and that means the soft coral and rock formations are well lit and beautiful. Turtles, Morays, and more are common and fun to look for between the rocks and under ledges.
I missed out on two interesting sites that were not being dived while I was there. French Cap and the Wreck of the Rhone. Those will definitely be on my list for a return visit.
Conclusions from the trip are that the soft corals and above water scenery make the trip worthwhile. The "big stuff" is a little lacking (no interesting currents nearby to support that life). However, the dive sites of St John are the best intro or 'Discover Scuba Diving' sites I have seen so far. Absolutely a fantastic place to get an introduction to scuba diving.
Another fun day was renting a small dinghy and snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay. I saw just as much interesting life and coral snorkeling there (Octopus, Turtles, Ray, etc...) as I did on any dive.
