Poor Knights IslandsAn island group of Northland, New Zealand. |
This island group has been uninhabited since the 1820s, and is now a nature reserve and popular diving spot. There are two main islands in this chain. Tawhiti Rahi is the larger, and Aorangi the smaller. The islands are the eroded remnants of a four million year old volcano. The islands' name is said to derive from their resemblance to Poor Knight's Pudding, a bread-based dish popular at the time of discovery by Europeans. A permit is required to land or tie boats here, usually only granted for scientific research. |
