This structure was used as a sediment settling basin during the construction of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River in the 1930s. Once clarified, water was piped to the Graven Screening Plant (Aggregate Piles) 40m/130ft below to wash gravel used in the dam's concrete.

This plant is usually under water but has been exposed during drought periods.
