La Jolla Shores is a popular area for recreational divers in southern California and home to the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park. The bottom is sandy and has a gradual slope from 10 feet to 30 feet, which is good for beginner divers. In fact, on a given weekend, many local dive shops use this area for courses. La Jolla Canyon is within swimming distance of the shore. The canyon is deep--up to 600 feet (180 meters) at some points--and home to various aquatic life. Due to its depth, the area attracts migrating whales close in to shore. Just to the south of La Jolla Shores is La Jolla Cove, another popular dive spot.
