The Vickery wreck is a 41m/136ft three-masted wooden schooner that was built in 1861 (as the J.B. Penfield). She met her end here on 17 August 1889 after the captain received incorrect direction from a river pilot, resulting in the striking of Rock Island Shoal. Depth here varies considerably, with the bow lying at 20m/65ft and stern at 35m/120ft. Be careful of potentially strong surface currents. There is a buoy just upstream of the Rock Island lighthouse. |
